Protecting the Bay

Protect the wildlifeSometimes it’s not easy being green, but as an integral part of the boating community, we must help protect our natural resources, boat sustainably and comply with state regulations. Here at the yard, we’re doing everything possible to keep our bay beautiful for generations to come, so we’ve incorporated new recycling programs and environmental guidelines. Please take a look below and help us do our part to keep the water and surrounding area crystal clean.

No Overboard Discharge: We are an approved RI-DEM pumpout facility, and are a certified inspection station for the state Marine Discharge sticker which is good for four years. (link to DEM regs)

A beautiful sunrise over the CoveShrink Wrap Recycling: We participate with the Rhode Island Marine Trade Association (RIMTA) boat shrink-wrap recycling program that collects used shrink wrap at marinas around the state and sells it to manufacturers who use recycled plastic in their products, such as toys. Last summer we diverted 3000 pounds of shrink wrap from the landfill and sent it on to its next life! RIMTA shrink wrap recycling bags are available at the office for $10 to cover their cost of hauling. One bag will generally fit shrink wrap for a 20’ boat.

Oil Disposal: Simply put all used oil into the spent oil tank next to the marina building, and we’ll take care of making sure it’s recycled with used-oil furnaces that burn waste oil.

Oil and Fuel Filters: We have an oil and fuel filter recycling program too, ask any of our crew and we will assist you in proper disposal.

Used Fuel: We also recycle used/old/waste gas, which has a small environmental fee. Simply ask one of the crew and we will assist you.

Pirate Cove Marina cares the environmentCardboard Recycling: We know you don’t want to take extra boxes aboard with you, so we’ve provided a cardboard-only dumpster for recycling. Just crush them flat, toss in the smaller dumpster with the “Cardboard only” sign and you’re on your way.

Bottom Work: Every project we approach is done in an environmentally-responsible way. We tarp under boats for sanding, stripping and grinding to catch debris and offer dust-less sanders for rent if you’re a do-it-yourselfer.

Paint, paint cans, brushes, rollers: At this time, these cannot be thrown in the dumpster due to environmental regulations. Please see one of our crew and we will help you with proper disposal.
